A leading UK aerospace manufacturer has strengthened its in-house repair capability with the installation of a Colchester Magnum HD 1000 VS heavy-duty manual lathe. 

Operating in a highly regulated environment, the company requires accuracy, reliability and operator safety when repairing and overhauling high-value components. The new machine addresses the need to machine large, elongated workpieces while handling heavy and interrupted cuts, demanding materials and extended turning operations. 

Supplied by Colchester Machine Tool Solutions, the Magnum HD 1000 VS features a one-piece floor-type cast iron bed, delivering rigidity, vibration damping and long-term dimensional stability. Its 1000 mm swing-over-bed and 4 m between centres accommodate large components, while an upgraded 30 kW spindle motor provides high torque at low speeds for efficient roughing and controlled finishing. 

The machine is equipped with a Multifix Model D quick-change toolpost, multiple tool and boring bar holders, a two-axis digital readout with an additional top-slide scale, and three- and four-jaw chucks. A heavy-duty steady rest, with 70-380 mm capacity, and rotating tailstock centre provide additional support for long or slender components. 

Operator safety was prioritised through the installation of emergency stop stations at both the headstock and tailstock ends, ensuring rapid access along the machine’s full length. 

Colchester Machine Tool Solutions managed delivery, installation and commissioning, completing the project in January 2026. The lathe entered production immediately. 

The investment has strengthened the manufacturer’s heavy turning capability, improving control over repair schedules and reducing dependence on subcontract machining. It also provides a robust, long-term solution backed by Colchester’s UK-based service, technical support and spare parts infrastructure.
