In modern production environments, competitive advantage is increasingly determined by how effectively a manufacturer can capture, connect and act on data. At Mitsubishi Electric Automotive Czech (MEAC), located in Slaný, data has become a strategic asset.

The facility, which supplies electrical automotive components including integrated starter generators to manufacturers across Europe, first opened in 2001. One of the most striking aspects of MEAC’s digital transformation is its approach to existing infrastructure. While many manufacturers would have pursued a strategy of replacing existing machinery and control systems, for MEAC, the focus has been on extracting greater value from equipment that continues to perform.

“On the production side, we keep what works,” explains Jan Kabát, manufacturing engineering manager. “Our Q-Series control units have been operating reliably for more than 10 years, while modernisation is achieved through a data layer using MES interfaces to connect machines and generate operational insights without disrupting output.”

He continues: “We do not modernise machines simply for the sake of it. The stable Q-Series control remains in place, while connectivity and data capabilities are added where they deliver measurable gains: less downtime, better visibility and faster troubleshooting.”

Such an approach has enabled MEAC to connect more than 100 machines through Mitsubishi Electric’s e-F@ctory architecture. This has created a digital layer that provides visibility into plant performance without incurring significant CapEx costs.

The data generated now forms the basis of day-to-day decision making throughout the factory. It enables engineers to create custom reports and deploy additional sensors where greater process visibility is required.

However, for MEAC, the real value of connectivity lies in the ability to continuously improve manufacturing performance. Digital tools and analytics provide detailed visibility into processes, allowing teams to quickly identify issues and implement corrective actions before they affect production quality or customer deliveries.

For Dalimil Bartoň, general manager, data has become central to the company’s continuous improvement strategy: “We use data to drive continuous improvement in both process and product quality. By analysing detailed manufacturing data, we can identify defect patterns, optimize processes and reduce scrap. The result is more consistent quality for customers and lower manufacturing costs for the business.

“The point isn’t about using technology for technology’s sake. It’s knowing how to deploy systems so they genuinely support production within a true PDCA cycle. While digital transformation is often associated with plant equipment, MEAC has also applied data-driven techniques to improve working conditions for employees. The company uses RFID technology and workstation data to understand how work is performed across the facility and identify opportunities to reduce physical strain.

Petr Soukup, manufacturing senior manager, explains: “We use RFID technology to identify operators and understand where they are working, combining this information with muscle-load and workstation-level data. This helps us plan job rotations and organize work more effectively to reduce ergonomic strain. As a result, we’ve achieved more consistent performance across shifts.”

With MEAC also understanding the impact of environmental conditions on production performance, the facility represents a comprehensive software-defined building based on Mitsubishi Electric iQ‑R PLCs and ICONICS GENESIS64 software.

According to Milan Koňarik, facility manager, the system provides a single view of critical facility infrastructure. “Our software-defined building is built on ICONICS and GENESIS64, with Mitsubishi Electric iQ-R PLCs. This allows us to actively manage the plant environment and its impact on production.”

He adds: “We monitor HVAC, the data centre, pre-cooling systems, UPS and other technical utilities, with over 3000 measurement points feeding a single data view for faster decision-making. The system can trigger SMS and email alarms, support smarter energy purchasing and help our energy-saving team act quickly. We see it as a practical tool for reducing energy costs and operational risk while keeping our carbon neutrality ambitions on track.”

Ultimately, as automotive manufacturers continue to face pressure to improve efficiency, quality and sustainability, MEAC shows how effective digital transformation can be achieved without disrupting established production processes.

New Ball-Nose End Mills For Machining Bearing Tracks

A high-performance solution for the economical and reliable machining of ball bearing tracks has been introduced by German cutting tool manufacturer, Horn. Available in the UK and Ireland through the group’s subsidiary in Ringwood, Hampshire, the new KX range of ball-nose end mills meets increasing demands for precision, flexibility and productivity in the manufacture of constant velocity (homokinetic) joints, used for transmitting smooth power to a vehicle’s drive wheels when cornering.

The bearing tracks in these joints have very tight dimensional tolerances, form tolerances to within microns and a high surface finish. The manufacturing quality, which determines the service life of the joint, is a direct result of the performance of the cutting tool, hence Horn’s decision to develop a top-end product for this application.

Available in three sizes, the precision-ground, solid-carbide, interchangeable heads have a rigid threaded connection to a modular cutter body. Flexible machining strategies enable cutting of material in either the soft or hardened state and operations span roughing and chamfering through to finish milling. Customers can therefore adapt the machining strategy precisely and hence cost-effectively to their process requirements. 

The edge preparation ensures soft-cutting performance to enhance reliability. Cutting values can be significantly raised, reducing cycle times. Benchmark tests confirm the high level of productivity that is possible. Depending on the component, machining time may be shortened by several seconds per workpiece. Moreover, the KX design is capable of milling deep tracks, extending the range of production applications.

TaeguTec Goes Deep With New VNGX-ST Chip Breaker

TaeguTec has expanded its Rhino-Turn range with the introduction of the VNGX-ST chip breaker, a double-sided, four-corner insert developed for heavy-duty turning applications. The latest addition is designed to increase productivity, extend tool life and reduce tooling costs by maximising insert utilisation.

Joining the company’s recently introduced ST chip breaker family, the VNGX-ST combines advanced chip control with the versatile VNGX platform to deliver faster machining while maintaining excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

Compatible with Rhino turning holders, the insert features four indexable cutting edges, doubling the usable corners compared with conventional two-edge heavy-duty turning inserts. The result is fewer insert changes, reduced downtime and lower carbide consumption, helping manufacturers improve overall machining efficiency.

Despite its 35° rhombic geometry, typically associated with finishing operations, the VNGX-ST is capable of handling depths of cut up to 3 mm. This capability enables the insert to perform everything from finishing through to heavy roughing, reducing the need for multiple tooling changes and improving process reliability.

A high 25° rake angle lowers cutting forces, minimising vibration while allowing higher cutting parameters and improved surface quality. Reduced mechanical and thermal loading also extends tool life and enhances component accuracy by limiting tool deflection.

TaeguTec recommends the VNGX-ST for use on Swiss-type sliding-head lathes, particularly machines equipped with servo oscillation technologies such as Citizen’s LFV and Star’s HFT or SCP systems, where effective chip control is critical for precision machining.

Available in six variants with either sharp or micro-honed cutting edges, the insert is suitable for machining steel, stainless steel and more demanding alloys. PVD-coated TT9020 and TT4430 grades provide high wear resistance, making the VNGX-ST well suited to high-volume production in sectors such as medical, aerospace and automotive manufacturing.

Tungaloy says this approach provides a faster and more intuitive way to locate suitable products while making technical knowledge more accessible.

Thousands Of Holes, No Doubt At Direct Drive Manufacturer

As manufacturers strive to improve process stability, increase productivity and support unattended production, tooling is playing an increasingly important role. According to Sandvik Coromant, a recent collaboration with direct-drive system manufacturer Hägglunds demonstrates how the right drilling solution can transform machining performance without replacing existing equipment.

Hägglunds, a Bosch Rexroth brand, was experiencing inconsistent results when drilling bearing steel cam rings. The existing drill lacked the durability and reliability required for predictable hole quality, preventing operators from running machines unattended and limiting overall productivity.

Working closely with Hägglunds, Sandvik Coromant identified the need for a more stable, wear-resistant drilling solution. The company recommended its second-generation CoroDrill DE10 exchangeable-tip drill, which features a patented pre-tension clamping interface that delivers high stability, accurate centring and consistent hole quality, even in demanding applications.

During production trials, the CoroDrill DE10 demonstrated repeatable performance over thousands of holes while supporting higher cutting data and extended tool life. The versatile -M5 tip geometry also eliminates the need for a pilot drill and enables rapid tip changes without spare parts, helping to simplify operations.

The improvements allowed Hägglunds to increase productivity by 18%, while doubling cutting time per drill tip from 40 to 80 minutes. Greater process reliability also enabled operators to leave machines running unattended, freeing them to focus on other tasks and supporting more efficient production.

Sandvik Coromant says the project highlights the value of its broader manufacturing wellness approach, which combines advanced tooling with engineering expertise, process optimisation and customer collaboration. Rather than relying on costly machine upgrades, manufacturers can improve output, extend tool life and strengthen operational resilience by optimising existing machining processes.
