Katthöfer Cutting Tools Continues Growth With Vollmer

Katthöfer Cutting Tools has strengthened its capability to regrind carbide-tipped circular saw blades following the installation of a fully automated Vollmer CS 860 grinding machine with ND 320 handling system at its Selm facility in north-west Germany.

The family-owned company supplies saw blade maintenance and procurement services to customers in the steel, tube, profile and aluminium industries, while also expanding into wood processing and non-ferrous metal machining. The investment enables Katthöfer to respond more effectively to growing demand for precision regrinding as manufacturers seek to extend tool life and reduce costs.

“Our long-term strategy includes working closely with manufacturers to support the development of HSS and carbide-tipped saw blades,” says managing director Daniel Katthöfer. “At the same time, rising material costs are making professional resharpening increasingly important. Our investment in the CS 860 enables us to deliver greater precision while offering customers a more economical and sustainable solution.”

Commissioned at the beginning of 2026, the fully CNC-controlled CS 860 processes circular saw blades from 80 to 860 mm in diameter. Integrated measuring systems, 3D probing and acoustic sensor technology automate machine setup and maximise process reliability, while intelligent software simplifies programming and automatically detects broken teeth and tooth pitch. Coupled with the ND 320 handling system, the machine can operate unattended around the clock, automatically changing saw blades weighing up to 11 kg.

Katthöfer says the investment is already opening new opportunities in the carbide sector by delivering greater grinding precision, longer tool life and consistently high cutting quality.

Tobias Trautmann, managing director of the Vollmer Group, adds: “Targeted investment in automated grinding technology enables specialist tool service providers to improve productivity, enhance quality and support long-term business growth.”
