TIMTOS and TMTS co-locate

For the first time ever, two major machine tool exhibitions in Taiwan, the Taipei International Machine Tool Show (TIMTOS) and Taiwan International Machine Tool Show (TMTS) will take place at the same time, as TIMTOS x TMTS 2022. The show will be on 21-26 February 2022 in Taipei. Aside from metal-cutting machine tools, machining centres and metal-forming machine tools, TIMTOS x TMTS 2022 will also showcase a line-up of smart machines. Smart machinery is part of the Taiwanese government’s ‘five plus two’ innovative industries plan.

Yamazaki Mazak recruits 17 apprentices

Yamazaki Mazak UK has demonstrated its commitment to the future of British manufacturing with the intake of 17 new apprentices. This latest wave brings the total to 62 apprentices currently in training with the machine tool manufacturer. The newest cohort’s training is split between a college education and hands-on involvement in the workplace, beginning at Worcestershire Group Training Association’s (WGTA) training centre in early September. Here, they will learn the basics of CNC machining, as well as electrical, mechanical and sheet metal manufacturing.

Hyfore introduces latest tool holders

Hyfore Workholding has introduced its latest line of high-quality collet chucks to meet exacting industry demands. The new range caters for all machines, including those with BT or HSK spindle tapers.

In the collet chuck series is the NR, NR-WD, C-H, C, HC, HEC and NR line of precision collet chucks, high-speed precision collet chucks, power milling chucks and hydraulic chucks. The NR and NR-WD series of high-precision collet chucks are available for tool shanks from 3 to 16 mm diameter with BT30, BT40 and BT50 variants available featuring a length from the spindle taper to the tool that ranges from 60 to 200 mm.

Alongside the NR range is the C and C-H series of power milling chucks. The C-type precision power milling chuck and the C-H high-speed variant are available in BT30, BT40 and BT50 variants that can clamp tool shanks up to 20 mm diameter with an external chuck diameter from 50 to 69 mm. This compact chuck design is further enhanced by a distance from the spindle taper to the tool of 85 to 165 mm.

For high-speed precision machining with light-duty cutting, Hyfore is introducing the HC high-speed precision collet chucks. Suitable for clamping tool shanks from 3 to 16 mm diameter and available in BT30, BT40 and BT50 variants, the HC series is offered with five different styles that demonstrate a range of capabilities such as extended reach, stability and clearance. Complementing the HC is the HEC range of hydraulic collet chucks. The BT30 variant is available in a complete range of diameters from 6 to 20 mm, with the BT40 and BT50 variants catering for shank diameters up to 32 mm.

XYZ enjoys renewed EU confidence

Sales of XYZ Machine Tools’ range of machine tools, particularly its ProtoTRAK controlled mills and lathes, are showing strong growth across Europe, with sales now representing 13% of company turnover. From the turn of the year sales have steadily increased thanks to renewed manufacturing confidence, particularly in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Netherlands and Belgium. Overall sales in 2021 to date are already 33% higher than the previous year, and are predicted to double by the year-end.

September saw 10 machines despatched to customers in Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden and Spain. While travel to visit these customers has been restricted, the export team at XYZ has remained active. In addition, a Norwegian dealer has just come on board, further extending the distribution network for XYZ machines.

Premium chuck with 5 μm accuracy

With a new development in the hexagonal chuck series from Hainbuch, the German clamping device manufacturer says it is taking precision to a new level. The new Toplus Premium Chuck introduces a host of additional advantages.

Hainbuch’s portfolio of chucks has always been very precise and, once chucks alignment is complete, runout is near to zero for repeat clamping. If the various chuck heads are then changed, runout is usually between 3 to 7 μm without alignment.

With the new Toplus Premium Chuck, Hainbuch guarantees a runout of ≤5 μm without alignment, regardless of which clamping head is used. Until now, this was only possible with an expensive hydraulic expansion or a diaphragm chuck. These systems have limitations entailed by their design. In many cases, runout of ≤10 μm is perfectly sufficient. However, components or machining processes that demand a runout of ≤5 μm are increasingly commonplace within the industry. By utilising the new Toplus Premium Chuck with the associated premium clamping heads and, by clamping against the workpiece stop, this level of accuracy is always achieved. As a result, manufacturers no longer have to lose time making alignments for small batch sizes.

To reduce set-up times, improve machine utilisation and reduce costs, a robot is often used to load the workpieces in the machine. This strategy can become a problem if the clamping stroke is too small. With the Toplus Premium Chuck combined with a clamping head, the stroke is increased to make loading easier, even if the robot works somewhat imprecisely. In addition, the Toplus Premium Chuck is very robust and not as sensitive as some other clamping devices. Any slight contact with the workpiece during loading has no effect on the chuck and the process remains stable. The chuck is also sealed against contamination and vibration.
