Increasingthe engineering aspirations of girls

EngineeringUK has released a new report which brings together the available evidence on interventions that aim to increase the engineering and technology career aspirations of girls.Despite some improvements, women still only make up 16.5% of the engineering workforce, compared with 47.7% of the overall workforce. Providing high-quality impactful STEM outreach activities for girls, therefore, is a vital part of addressing this issue.A summary of existing evidence, the report aims to inform programme design and delivery for STEM engagement practitioners and funders, and highlight any evidence gaps.

Summit success for Soraluce

At the summit of machine tool manufacturer Soraluce last month, the company set about demonstrating its expertise in milling, boring, multi-tasking and automated solutions. Notably, Soraluce presented its new Performance Line with live demonstrations. The event also celebrated the grand opening to the LEED-certified Soraluce assembly plant.Through a guided tour, the company showcased spaces that focus on smart damping, digital services, head manufacturing and aerospace solutions. DIMF offer window into the future

DN Solutions’ biennial International Machine Tool Fair (DIMF) took place in South Korea last month, whenit was heralded a ‘huge success’ by company officials and, more importantly, by the 4500 plus visitors from 55 countries that attended the week-long event.Representatives from Mills CNC, the exclusive distributor of DN Solutions’ machine tools and automation systems in the UK and Ireland, attended the event to see for themselves the latest product developments, new technologies and state-of-the-art system solutions.

Showcasing 65 machine tools in total, specific highlights that will, over the next few months and years, be gaining traction with UK and Irish manufacturers included: the DVF 4000 five-axis machining centre; the SVM 5100L high-speed machining centre for the fast processing of aluminium parts and other lightweight materials; and the single- and multi-level round pallet (automation) systems for integration with NHC, NHP and NHM horizontal machining centres.

Subtractive manufacturing

The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) highlighted the importance of subtractive manufacturing for the UK at its first showcase event in this key technology area.Organisers now hope the day will become a biennial fixture. More than 100 people attended the sold out event, hearing from machining experts at the University of Sheffield AMRC on recent achievements within subtractive manufacturing, the challenges faced by industry and how it can adapt towards a digitally enhanced, sustainable future. The engineer-to-engineer led day took place across two AMRC locations in South Yorkshire.
