LK celebrates one year of independence

Control 2019 in Stuttgart proved to be the venue for British CMM manufacturer LK Metrology to celebrate its first year of trading as a stand-alone company once more.

LK was purchased at the end of March 2018 from Nikon Metrology by Angelo Muscarella, owner of Italian firm ASF Metrology. The last time LK was independently owned was prior to its takeover by former holding group Metris at the beginning of 2006. In 2018, the company celebrated its 55th anniversary in the metrology industry.
“We are delighted to complete our first year so successfully, during which we made a profit despite the expense necessarily incurred in transferring ownership of the company, which included opening a new office in Shanghai,” says Muscarella. “We’ve already launched a packaged version of our Altera CMM with Renishaw Revo-2 probe, which is called the SCANtek 5. In addition, at the Control exhibition we previewed another newly developed product, the AlteraC 10.7.5, which is the first of three sizes planned.”

Subcon 2019 opens this week

The Subcon show returns this week (4-6 June) at the NEC, Birmingham. Now in its 43rd year, the show remains the UK’s only dedicated event that enables subcontract manufacturing buyers to source suppliers, benchmark capabilities and form new manufacturing partnerships.

Against a backdrop of profound uncertainty and change within the engineering and manufacturing industries, Subcon 2019 will show how the industry continues to innovate and deliver maximum value, with three events in one venue (Subcon, The Engineer Expo and Advanced Manufacturing Show).
Following the success of the conference programme in 2018, this year’s Subcon will feature presentations from industry pioneers such as Siemens and Rolls-Royce, as well as thought leadership from organisations including MakeUK, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and WMG (formerly the Warwick Manufacturing Group). A total of 34 sessions are scheduled to take place.

XYZ Machine Tools posts record year

XYZ Machine Tools has continued its record-breaking run of year-end results, posting an 11% increase in turnover for 2018/19, taking it to £33.9m.

The coming year is also one of optimism for the machine-tool company, with order books remaining encouragingly strong and plans in the pipeline for more new product developments, along with the opening of a new showroom in the north of England.
“There is some amazing positivity in the manufacturing sector at the moment, despite the uncertainty that our politicians are generating around Brexit,” says Nigel Atherton, managing director at XYZ Machine Tools. “Our sales have been bolstered by a mix of optimism in the industry, along with the addition of new products to our portfolio such as
the LR series of vertical machining centres, our two UMC five-axis machining centres, and the latest generation of ProtoTrak RMX and RLX controls
for our mills and lathes.”

Growth backed by global success

Falmouth-based Feritech specialises in engineering systems that operate in the harshest of environments, specifically subsea, where its products are used to survey the sea bed and provide geotechnical data for the oil and gas, military, and surveying sectors. As sales at the independently-owned business have grown, so has the need for machined components.

Initially reliant on external subcontracting, Feritech took the decision to purchase its own machining capacity, which saw the arrival of the company’s first XYZ machine.
With further growth planned the decision was taken in 2018 to bring all machining, where possible, in-house. Feritech did this by creating Carrick Engineering as its bespoke subcontract service contained within the same building. Since then, machining capacity has grown significantly and now features five machines from XYZ Machine Tools: an SMX SLV turret mill, an SLX 555 ProTurn lathe, a TC320 LTY turning centre, a TC 400 turning centre and a VMC 1510 HD vertical machining centre.
