At a special anniversary open house held on 13 September, Filtermist International showcased just how much the company has changed since it was established in 1969.

The event, which attracted over 75 local dignitaries and delegates from across the manufacturing sector, not only marked the firm’s 50th birthday, but doubled-up as the official opening of its Telford Distribution Centre, located just a few minutes’
walk from Filtermist’s purpose-built HQ on the T54 Business Park. At the open house, live demonstrations were performed by the company’s skilled spinners.

With a new blisk and impeller machine making its public debut, complemented by a host of technology developments and demonstrations on a range of machines and ‘partner’ workstations featuring innovative production technologies, this year’s Starrag’s Turbine Technology Days – the seventh in the series – left a record number of visitors (from 18 countries) with plenty to think about in terms of world-class manufacturing of turbine blades, blisks and engine casings.

The highlight of the event was the new Starrag NB 151 for the machining of impellers and blisks of up to 600 mm in diameter and 300 kg in weight.

Three new ‘UK’ machining cell launches and the first showcase of HK Technologies’ latest 3D printing, EDM and laser-marking technology, will be the main highlights of the Engineering Technology Group’s open house on 2-3 October.

Over 150 industry delegates are expected to attend the two-day ‘Discover Turnkey Excellence’ event at ETG’s Warwickshire headquarters, with the emphasis on highlighting new advancements in CNC machining and additive manufacturing as more manufacturers explore bespoke production solutions. Some €408,000 of EU funding has been awarded to the University of Wolverhampton for a new project to address skills gaps in manufacturing and engineering.

Newly developed training methods will now be used to develop high-level expertise in advanced manufacturing technologies focused on additive layer manufacturing (ALM). Entitled ‘Additive Process Technology Integration with Management and Entrepreneurship’, the project was awarded Erasmus + funding. Six European universities will now partner to create flexible learning that could result in a Master’s qualification.

The first quarter of XYZ Machine Tools’ 2019/2020 financial year has continued the positive growth in turnover that saw the company post record figures for its year ending April 2019.

In the first quarter turnover has risen by over 6%, with sentiment in the market remaining strong across XYZ’s product range. Sales growth has also led to another accolade for the company, with it gaining 17 places in the Western Morning News’ Annual Business Guide Top 150 Businesses in Devon and Cornwall, moving up from 135th to 118th. This is no mean feat given that these 150 companies have a combined turnover of £14 billion.
