Sales boom prompts Stock Exchange recognition

One of Yorkshire’s fastest growing manufacturers has received recognition from the London Stock Exchange after posting £44m in sales over the past 12 months. Employing over 250 people, the Conservatory Outlet Group has been named in LSE’s annual publication of ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’, highlighting firms that have significantly grown their own revenue and consistently outperformed industry peers. Conservatory Outlet’s success has prompted the start of a £500,000 staged investment in equipment, key infrastructural changes and a 10,000 sq ft factory expansion.

NMIS joins AM association

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) has become the first UK member of a new global trade group to advance sustainability in additive manufacturing (AM). NMIS is one of 12 leading organisations to join the Additive Manufacturer Green Trade Association (AMGTA), created to promote the environmental benefits of AM. AMGTA will serve as a key industry resource to educate the public and industry about these positive environmental benefits, in turn nurturing industry best practice and the adoption of AM as an alternative to traditional manufacturing.

KMF invests in youngsters

Precision engineering solutions firm KMF Group has taken on five youngsters as the company continues its apprenticeship programme for the 10th year running. KMF Group invests in young people every year and, despite COVID-19, is not prepared to risk losing talent by changing its process now. The past decade has seen 100 apprentices come through the scheme, including 12 adult apprentices. This year, Shay Johnston, Aiden Sneyd, Oscar Evans, Kelly Palin and Kyle Marshall have joined the precision engineering business.
The apprentices will complete an engineering operating level 2 apprenticeship.

Quickgrind prepares apprentices for WorldSkills

Cutting-tool specialist Quickgrind is currently undergoing the training cycle for the WorldSkills 2021 competition in Shanghai. The two UK ‘CNC Milling Squad’ finalists are Abigail Stansfield from BAE Systems and Joel Keen, an apprentice at Roke. The pair will face-off at a competition, currently postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, to decide selection for Shanghai. Quickgrind has provided its expertise and cutting tools to help the apprentices, including the Alligator and Caiman ranges of three-flute end mills for aluminium, and the Q-Cut and Mirage series of four-flute tools for steel machining.

UK’s first Lasertec machine

Known for its involvement in the motorsport and automotive sectors, JRM Group has invested in the UK’s first DMG Mori Lasertec 30 SLM second-generation metal powder-bed additive manufacturing machine. The Lasertec will be the cornerstone of building closer relationships with existing customers and expanding into other sectors, including aerospace and medical. With a 300 mm cubic working volume, the machine uses powder-bed laser technology, where metal powder layers of between 20-100 µm thick are fused together with a 600 W laser source.
